Challenge Grant Offers, Fall 2011

The National Endowment for the Humanities Office of Challenge Grants made twenty-one grant offers following the November meeting of the National Council on the Humanities:

  • $425,000 to Teachers College, Columbia University to endow the Center for History Education
  • $400,000 to Gilcrease Museum to endow its chief conservator position
  • $425,000 to Auburn University to endow the Encyclopedia of Alabama
  • $425,000 to Winterthur Museum to endow a Director of Conservation position
  • $425,000 to the University of Kansas Center for Research to endow collaborative research programs in the Hall Center for the Humanities
  • $425,000 to Bard College to endow programs in the Hannah Arendt Center
  • $425,000 to the Maymont Foundation to endow staff salaries and programming
  • $425,000 to Mass Humanities to endow a Fund for New Communities
  • $425,000 to the Indiana Historical Society to support the Indiana Experience
  • $425,000 to Lawrence University to endow postdoctoral fellows in the humanities
  • $300,000 to the University of Wisconsin, Madison to remodel the Max Kade Institute Library and Archives and to endow programs
  • $425,000 to the Hastings Center to endow a senior humanities chair and visiting scholar activities
  • $425,000 to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to endow humanities exhibitions and programs in a new wing
  • $395,000 to Bentley University to endow a humanities research seminar and affiliated programming
  •  $200,000 to Oklahoma Christian University to endow programs in the McBride Center for Public Humanities
  • $425,000 to the Universidad del Este to build the Jesus Pinero Library
  • $425,000 to the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library to enhance the museum's education endowment
  • $425,000 to Wesleyan University to endow a curator position in the Wesleyan Cinema Archives
  • $100,000 to the Newton Historical Society to endow the interpretation of the Durant-Kenrick Homestead
  • $425,000 to California State University, Fullerton to relocate and expand the Center for Oral and Public History
  • $425,000 to the Museum of History and Industry to endow staff salaries
