"Near Miss" Incident Information File

12/17/2004
Three Chapman, Maine boys around 15 or 16 years old suffered bone fractures and a grueling, half-mile walk out of the woods after their snowmobiles hit the edge of a gravel pit and dropped 15 feet into the hole. The teens snowmobiles left the edge of the gravel pit one by one, were airborne for about 25 feet, then dropped about 15 feet at the bottom of the pit. One of the boys received fractures to his back and hands, another had a broken ankle and the third suffered leg and elbow injuries. If all three had not been wearing helmets, their injuries would have been worse, according to the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Game Warden. (Source: Bangor Daily News)
