US Labor Department's OSHA to host Hispanic
Safety Summit in Seaford, Del., June 10

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration will host a Hispanic safety summit June 10 from 1:30-5:30 p.m. EDT at the Iglesia Dios Maranatha Church located at 24620 German Road in Seaford. More than 100 people are expected to participate, including workers, employers, and representatives of community organizations and federal and state agencies.

The summit will offer safety and health workshops related to the poultry, landscaping and construction industries. Presentations will be given on OSHA's campaigns to prevent heat illness among outdoor workers and falls at construction sites. Information on federal wage protections will be provided by the department's Wage and Hour Division. Individuals will be encouraged to voice their workplace concerns to OSHA and the Wage and Hour Division, as well as to community and faith-based advocacy organizations.

Each year, Hispanic workers are killed and suffer workplace injuries at higher rates than all other workers. In 2010, 707 Hispanic workers – more than 13 a week – were killed nationwide from work-related injuries. Strategies to combat these statistics will be discussed during the summit.
