  3. During the War of 1812, the Great Lakes were of strategic importance to both the British and to the U.S. The U.S. Navy fought valiantly to defending the entire Ohio Valley while simultaneously keeping open the possibility of invading Canada. On this day in 1813, a certain U.S. Navy Commodore famously said "We have met the enemy and they are ours..." Name the Commodore, the battle he is referring to, and the General, who eventually became President of the United States, he said these words to. No cheating, now! We'll drop some hints if need be.
  4. Drum head discus throw, tire flip, and stage crew slalom were just a few of the events teams of Navy Band members competed in at the CPOlympics on Aug. 30, 2012. Check out his short documentary of what ensued.

  6. In the month of August, the Navy Band performed 35 public concerts, 107 ceremonies, and 22 miscellaneous jobs! That is a large amount of public concerts, were you able to catch one?
  7. Your Navy is our nation's front line in war and peace, operating on, above and below the sea! Check out these "Faces of the Fleet" and as always, feel free to share your pictures with us on our wall!
  8. #TriviaTuesday: The famous march "Entry of the Gladiators" also goes by another name, probably given to it by American circus bands in the late 19th and early 20th Century. What is the other name for the march and who originally wrote it? See if you can get it without cheating!
  9. On this Labor Day we salute possibly the hardest working man in the command. Chief Musician John Schroeder currently holds the command record for the most "Taps" rendered with over 920.
  10. Are you itching to hear the Country Current play on tour but don't live in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, or Texas? Well, here's a full one-hour performance from their gig at the Kennedy Center on Aug. 28. Spoiler alert: If you live in one of the above states and plan to hear Country Current on the road, you might hear some of the same tunes live!
  11. On Saturday Aug. 18 the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band participated in a military tattoo program at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. This special event marked the 200th anniversary of the battle of USS Constitution versus the...
British frigate Guerriere during the War of 1812. Needless to say, Constitution won that fabled battle and established a mystique of having "iron sides."

  15. The Negro spiritual "Wade in De Water" was said to have been sung by Harriet Tubman as she led escaping slaves to freedom. The lyrics remind the escaping slaves to walk through rivers and streams to throw off the chasing dogs. Check out this video of the Sea Chanters singing a version of this spiritual arranged by Allen Koepke.
