Background Information |
Sample Map
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Water
Resources of the United States office, in cooperation with Federal, State,
and local agencies, compiles water-use estimates for each county in the
United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin
Islands. Data on water withdrawals by area, water source, and category
of use have been compiled at 5-year intervals since 1950, and are stored
in the USGS internal database AWUDS, the Aggregate Water-Use Data System.
These efforts are part of the USGS National
Water Use Information Program, which was implemented to provide uniform, current, and reliable
information on water use. Water-use estimates are used by the USGS, other
agencies, organizations, academic institutions, and the public for research,
water-management decisions, trend analysis, and water-demand forecasting.
The Estimated Use of Water in the United States map layers show estimated
water use by county, for the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S.
Virgin Islands. Included are ground water, surface water, fresh water,
saline water and total water use, for public supply, industrial, irrigation,
mining, livestock, and thermoelectric power. There are five data files, one each for the years 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005.
They were compiled by the USGS. Additional information about USGS water activities is available
from the Water Resources
of the United States home page. Water-use statistics,
including information on self-supply domestic use, commercial use,
aquaculture use, wastewater treatment use, hydroelectric power use, and
water use by State, are available from the USGS Water
Use in the United States page.
