The U.S. Census Bureau conducts a census of population every 10 years,
as mandated by the United States Constitution. These population data
are used to determine the number of seats each State has in the House
of Representatives, the voting district boundaries within the States,
and the allocation of Government services. In addition, local governments
and private industries use census information for a wide variety of
applications. This map layer was compiled by the U.S. Census Bureau.
The United States Census Database, 2000 includes population information
from the year 2000 census for the United States and Puerto Rico. The

The National Atlas also includes 1980 Census
