    Statement by U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez on the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders’ Report to the President

    WASHINGTON -- U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez released the following statement today following the transmittal of two reports to the President from the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and the Interagency Working Group on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI). The reports provide recommendations on economic opportunities for AAPI-owned businesses and examine Federal Government programs to support the AAPI business community.

    “I commend Chairman Rudy Pamintuan of the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for his leadership in examining the current economic participation of the AAPI-owned businesses in our free market economy. I wish to thank Commissioner and Chair of the Report Committee Joseph Melookaran and the Commission for their hard work and for compiling this report to the President.

    The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA), U.S. Department of Commerce, announced today at a press conference new funding to establish the Nevada Minority Business Enterprise Center (Nevada MBEC).  MBDA awarded Las Vegas-based New Venture Capital Development Company (New Venture CDC) with a $218,250 grant to operate the Nevada MBEC after conducting a competitive solicitation and evaluation process.

    Albuquerque-based Businessman Honored by MBDA at its 24th National Minority Enterprise Development Week Awards Gala in Washington, DC

    WASHINGTON—The Minority Business Development Agency’s National Director Ronald N. Langston recognized Jim Long, a Hispanic entrepreneur and founder of Heritage Hotels & Resorts, Inc. as the 2006 National Minority Retailer of the Year award winner during the 24th National Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week conference in Washington, D.C.

    “The MBDA Entrepreneur of the Year award honors entrepreneurs whose ingenuity, hard work and perseverance have created and sustained successful, growing business ventures,” said National MBDA Director Ronald N. Langston. “Mr. Long along with the remaining MBDA national winners truly exemplifies what it means to be a successful entrepreneur who has created wealth and jobs for building and sustaining economy and the community.”

    Los Angeles School District’s Small Business Manager by MBDA Honored at 24th National Minority Enterprise Development Week Awards Gala in Washington, DC


    WASHINGTON—The Minority Business Development Agency’s National Director Ronald N. Langston recognized Veronica Soto, Small Business Manager of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), as the 2006 National Minority Business Advocate of the Year award winner during the 24th National Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week conference in Washington, D.C.

    “I am pleased to honor Ms. Soto as the MBDA Minority Business Advocate of the Year award winner. She exemplifies a true advocate working for qualified, diverse business community that reflects the diverse communities of California and of the Nation,” said National MBDA Director Ronald N.     ATLANTA, GA --The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) announced today that AALS Translation Services, an Asian-owned firm, will receive the “Service Firm of the Year” award from the MBDA Atlanta Region as part of the Agency’s Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week International Trade Day.

    During the Expanding Horizons workshop held in Atlanta on September 28, MBDA’s National Director, Ronald N. Langston will present the award to AALS to recognize its global success in the service industry. The Expanding Horizon workshop, co-hosted by MBDA and the Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC), is the first of three workshops being held around the country to educate minority entrepreneurs about government programs available to support overseas investment in developing countries.

    MBDA National Director will speak at the 2006 USHCC Convention in Philadelphia, PA on September 21

    PHILADELPHIA, PA—The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) today announced it will form a new partnership with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USHCC) to join efforts in analyzing and developing economic data and identifying more procurement opportunities for the nation’s 1.6 million Hispanic businesses.

    “Hispanic Americans are playing an ever-expanding role in setting the direction of our country with Hispanic businesses as one of the fastest growing segments of the U.S. economy,” said National Director of the Minority Business Development Agency Ronald Langston. “Our innovative and entrepreneurial spirit is thriving in America, and I look forward to working with the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

    Annual National MED Week Conference Recognize Anniversary of Katrina

    WASHINGTON, DC –On the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, August 29, 2006, the Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) will kick off the National Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week conference in Washington, DC at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

    “August 29th marks the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which changed the lives of many Americans,” said MBDA National Director Ronald N. Langston. “As we launch into MED Week, MBDA is rededicating the Agency’s commitment to rebuilding minority businesses affected by Hurricane Katrina.” The MED Week 2006 Conference will feature two workshops that will educate minority entrepreneurs on how they can take part in the rebuilding efforts in the Gulf Coast, gain access to contracting opportunities and learn about tax incentives in the Gulf.

    “Recognizing the challenges that Gulf Coast minority business owners would face in trying to reestablish their businesses such as filing for disaster loans, finding alternative credit sources, rebuilding business records, infrastructure and inventory, MBDA launched into action a year ago” said Mr. Langston. “Under our Rebuilding the Gulf Initiative, we have opened satellite
    offices in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana to assist minority businesses with management and technical assistance. We expect to extend our reach into Biloxi, Mississippi and Mobile, Alabama, too.”
