Update on Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Event

A Tsunami Warning continues for the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Point Concepcion, California, to the Oregon-Washington border. A Tsunami Advisory continues for the coastal areas of California from the California-Mexico Border to Point Concepcion, California, and coastal areas of Washington - British Columbia and Alaska from the Oregon-Washington Border to Attu, Alaska, and the entire state of Hawaii. Samoan Earthquake and Tsunami

A major earthquake with magnitude near 8.0 struck at 148 pm EDT Tuesday about 125 miles south of the Samoan Islands in the South Central Pacific Ocean. The NOAA National Weather Service (NWS) Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) in Ewa Beach, Hawaii issued the first of a series of Regional Tsunami Warning messages at 204 pm EDT. The initial warning included American Samoa, Western Samoa, Tonga, and other nearby islands. A Tsunami Watch was issued for areas further removed from the epicenter, including Hawaii. The first in a series of at least four waves hit the Samoas shortly after 2 pm EDT (7 am Samoa Standard Time). News reports have been mentioning major damage on the south shores of the islands. CNN International was reporting at least 84 fatalities as of early Wednesday morning - 55 in Western Samoa, 22 in American Samoa, and 7 in Tonga. Details...

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a non-expanding regional Tsunami Warning for a part of the Pacific near an earthquake centered off the west coast of the South Island New Zealand. Based on all available data there is no destructive tsunami threat to Hawaii. However, some coastal areas in Hawaii could experience small non-destructive sea level changes and strong or unusual currents lasting up to several hours. Details...

U.S. Tsunami Buoy Network Completed

NOAA has deployed the final tsunami detection buoys in the South Pacific, completing the buoy network and bolstering the U.S. tsunami warning system. NOAA Helps Prepare East Coast Communities For Tsunami, Storm-Driven Flood Threats

A team of scientists NOAA’s National Geophysical Data Center and the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences, both based in Boulder, Colo., took a crucial step forward in NOAA’s effort to prepare U.S. coastal communities, including Long Island, Atlantic City, and Daytona Beach for potentially deadly tsunami and storm-driven flooding. The scientists created high-resolution digital elevation models, or DEMs, for the three cities. The DEMs are constructed from near-shore seafloor depth and land elevation data to create a detailed representation of coastal relief. They provide the underlying framework necessary to accurately forecast the magnitude and extent of coastal flooding during a tsunami or storm surge event. Details...
