National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA)
The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) within the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for the management and security of the nation's nuclear weapons, nuclear nonproliferation and naval reactor programs. It also responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in the United States and abroad. Additionally, NNSA federal agents provide safe and secure transportation of nuclear weapons and components and special nuclear materials along with other missions supporting the national security.
The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) provides support and quality leadership to NNSA and actively pursues collaborations with other national laboratories, universities and industry to solve our most challenging programs. PNNL's 40-year Hanford heritage has enabled it to develop a strong foundation in actinide separations science, the nuclear fuel cycle, international safeguards and export control, nonproliferation technology and nuclear fuels and materials. Our goals are to help develop and deploy U.S. government policy, support programmatic decisions on new technologies and their deployment, prevent acquisition of nuclear material and information by those who are unauthorized and enable U.S. industrial competitiveness.
