Become a Registered Tax Return Preparer

Follow these steps to become a Registered Tax Return Preparer:

  1. Obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN);
  2. Take and pass the Registered Tax Return Preparer Competency Test;
  3. Pass a tax compliance suitability check (initiated on your behalf by IRS);
  4. Receive your RTRP certificate

Once you become an RTRP you must: 

  1. Renew your PTIN annually
    • Renew online during the open season period: Mid-October to December 31
    • At renewal you are required to self-certify that you have completed or plan to complete your CE requirement by December 31. You are NOT required to upload supporting documentation.
  1. Obtain 15 hours of continuing education (CE) from an IRS-approved provider annually
    • 2 hours of ethics
    • 3 hours of federal tax law updates
    • 10 hours of other federal tax law
  1. Keep your information current by updating it as needed through your online PTIN account
