U.S. Department of Labor announces grant exceeding $528,000 to assist workers affected by leather industry layoffs in Maine

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $528,722 grant to assist workers affected by layoffs at Prime Tanning Co. Inc. in Berwick, Maine. Layoffs occurred on Sept. 29, 2008, and all production has since ceased at the Berwick facility.

"Today's grant will provide affected Maine workers with the necessary training and employment services to help their re-employment prospects in area industries," said Deputy Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training Brent R. Orrell.

This grant, awarded to the Maine Department of Labor, will offer employment-related assistance to workers who have been impacted by layoffs at Prime Tanning Co. Inc. Re-employment services will include training for skills in regional industries, such as advanced manufacturing, health care, retail and tourism. Supportive services, such as transportation and child care, also will be available.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit www.doleta.gov/NEG.
