Volvo To Unveil New 4-Cylinder Engine Range

By AutoObserver Staff September 7, 2011

The future is 4-cylinder engines across the board for Volvo Cars as the company plans to unveil a generation of all-new engines at next week’s Frankfurt motor show. The so-called Volvo Environmental Architecture engine architecture will be the foundation for both gasoline and diesel engines and will provide for high-performance and high-economy variants, Volvo said. The new VEA 4-cylinder engines are lighter and greatly standardize parts while improving efficiency by as much as 35 percent. In conjunction with the VEA engine platform, Volvo also will introduce a new modular vehicle chassis at the Frankfurt show.

Volvo, owned since 2010 by China’s Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., is one of the few mainstream automakers that continues to use inline 6-cylinder engines, but the company promises the new VEA 4-cylinder units will be more powerful than its I-6s but also more efficient than its current 4-cylinder engines. The new engine line is evidence of Volvo’s continuing separation from former owner Ford Motor Co., from whom Volvo continues to source some engines.

The 2.5l I5 is a Volvo engine still used in some Fords. The I6s are all Volvo. The 4.4l V8 was developed by Yamaha for Volvo. Are they still using Ford Duratec I4s in other markets?
