MPAs: Helping to Preserve a Part of Our History 2012 also marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Hampton Roads, and the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, both watershed periods in maritime history. The Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, a national MPA system partner, was the first Sanctuary created, in 1975. Engaging Stakeholders Identifying shipwrecks and other cultural resources for protection is an ongoing challenge. The Cultural Heritage Resources Working Group of the MPA Federal Advisory Committee has produced a white paper with recommendations to help address this challenge. Their recommendations suggest using a Cultural Landscape Approach (CLA) to help better address emerging coastal and marine resource management issues. A CLA will integrate cultural and natural resource management, and examine resources at the landscape level.
