If any of the commemorative events or programming for the 100th anniversary of Titanic's sinking sparked your interest, continue your exploration with MPAs! We all share some sort of maritime heritage, whether you had an ancestor on the Titanic, your great-grandparents immigrated to this country by boat, you grew up in a coastal town, or you have a favorite beach you visit every year. The sea connects rather than divides us, and understanding our past maritime connections can better prepare us to face the uncertainties of the future.

MPAs: Helping to Preserve a Part of Our History
April 15, 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. Since the discovery of the wreck site in 1985, NOAA has been involved in protecting and preserving the site in some capacity - from participating in exploration and scientific missions to negotiating international agreements. Learn more about NOAA's role here: http://www.noaa.gov/titanic/

2012 also marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Hampton Roads, and the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, both watershed periods in maritime history. The Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, a national MPA system partner, was the first Sanctuary created, in 1975. Cultural Heritage MPAs Within the National System of MPAs
In 2009, the U.S. established the National System of MPAs, a partnership of the nation's MPA programs to facilitate more effective MPA management to conserve the nation's marine resources.

Many National System MPAs were designed to protect marine cultural resources, or feature shipwrecks prominently. These include:

Engaging Stakeholders

Identifying shipwrecks and other cultural resources for protection is an ongoing challenge. The Cultural Heritage Resources Working Group of the MPA Federal Advisory Committee has produced a white paper with recommendations to help address this challenge. Their recommendations suggest using a Cultural Landscape Approach (CLA) to help better address emerging coastal and marine resource management issues. A CLA will integrate cultural and natural resource management, and examine resources at the landscape level.
