Wounded Warrior Program

Taking care of wounded Warriors is an important part of the Army's mission. The Army Wounded Warrior (AW2) Program is the official Army program that serves severely wounded, ill, and injured Soldiers, Veterans and their families. Letterkenny Army Depot contains vast acres of hunting grounds and has specifically designed opportunities for Wounded Warrior Soldiers from Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) to participate in hunts at the Depot. The 2011 hunting season was the fifth annual AW2 Hunt. Two hunting dates were held for 10 Wounded Warrior Soldiers and their escorts from WRAMC. They successfully harvested 8 deer. Since 2007 LEAD has held 14 hunts for 37 Soldiers from WRAMC harvesting a total of 42 deer.

In the spring, Letterkenny hosts a Spring Gobbler Hunt where Soldiers from WRAMC have the opportunity to harvest turkeys. Volunteers from the Natural Resources Program assist by escorting the Soldiers throughout their hunt and provide turkey-calling expertise. During the 2011 Spring Gobbler Hunt, Letterkenny Army Depot (LEAD) held two turkey hunts for 8 Wounded Warriors (AW2) Soldiers and escorts (Cadre) from Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRNMMC) harvesting 1 turkey. The dates of the hunts were 5/6 and 5/7.  Since 2008 LEAD has held 8 hunts for 22 Soldiers from WRNMMC harvesting 7 turkeys.
