German artist Rudolf Menge was an prisoner of war in that era, and he spent his time interned sketching the people and scenes around him. MengeAca,!a,,cs nephew Helmut Schoen wanted to fulfill his uncleAca,!a,,cs wishes and preserve a bit of that era by donating those sketches to the U.S. Army.   • Post program expands to give more spouses career training

    Fort Lewis recently expanded its Military Spouse Career Account program to accommodate more spouses. The Military Spouse Career Account, an employment and training demonstration project, provides grants for spouses who want to receive training or certification in certain fields. The targeted career fields are those that are either portable, making them suitable for frequent relocation, or those deemed in high-growth industries by the Department of Labor. Four new areas of study were added to the program last week: hospitality, business management, human resources and homeland security. The original targeted career fields are: financial services, information technology, health care, education and trade industries.

Korean War veterans were said to have Aca,!A"war neurosisAca,!A? and Vietnam veterans were diagnosed with Aca,!A"post-Vietnam syndrome.Aca,!A? Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, as it has become known in recent years, has affected war combatants for centuries, if not millennia, with side effects ranging from mild Aca,!" problems sleeping; certain sights, sounds or smells causing nervousness or jumpiness Aca,!" to severe Aca,!" nightmares, night sweats, being afraid to go to sleep for fear of being attacked, total lack of ability to interact with society. For years there has been a stigma about PTSD in the military; that those with it should just suck it up, and that those who seek professional help are weak. It is that mindset retired Lt. Col. Dave Grossman has spent the past decade trying to eliminate.

  • New barracks opens for post pets

    Dogs and cats have a new place to call their own on Fort Lewis: The Pet Brigade Dog and Cat Barracks. The new facility opened its doors last week to the post community and took in its first four-legged clients. The barracks, Building 04907 on Pendleton Drive, North Fort; offers services like doggie day care, boarding, grooming and, in the future, training.
