Government Approved Services and Products

HSPD-12 requires that federal identity management and credentialing systems be interoperable; this is the first time that interoperability across all departments and agencies has been mandated. To ensure interoperability, products and services will be evaluated and approved for HSPD-12 implementation.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) established the NIST Personal Identity Verification Program (NPIVP) to validate Personal Identity Verification (PIV) smartcard and middleware components.

GSA established the FIPS 201 Evaluation Program to complete the performance and interoperability testing process. There is no cut off date for enrollment and vendors may apply at any time to get their service or product approved. GSA publishes an Approved Products List for products and services that have completed NIST validation and GSA testing, as required.
