81,120 tons. 555 feet tall. 896 steps. On October 9, 1888, the world's tallest stone structure opened to the public--the Washington Monument. It stands in honor of George Washington's military heroism during the American Revolution. Construction of the massive obelisk began in 1848, then halted in 1856 due to the Civil War, political unrest, and monetary uncertainty. Building resumed in 1876, finishing at last in 1884. Today marks 124 years since its opening. While the monument is still structurally sound, it is currently undergoing repairs after damage from an earthquake on August 23, 2011.
