SECTION 508 SURVEYS and REPORTS
Overview
Section 508 of the
Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (29 U.S.C. § 794d) requires the federal
government to ensure that the electronic and information technology that it
develops, procures, maintains, or uses is accessible to persons with
disabilities. Section 508 also directs the Attorney General to submit reports
to the President and Congress on the state of federal agencies' compliance with
the Act's requirements. In preparation for its report, the Department of
Justice conducts a survey of federal agencies to obtain information on the
state of compliance with Section 508, including the Section 508
Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility Standards.
Each
federal department or agency is required by Section 508 to provide the Department
of Justice with information that is needed to prepare the reports. Following
below is information about the Department of Justice’s Section 508 surveys and reports.
Section
508 Survey and Report
2011 Self-Evaluation Survey and Report
- On February 17, 2011,
the Attorney General issues a memorandum (HTML,
PDF)
noticing heads of all federal
departments and agencies that the Department of Justice will conduct a
survey in order to obtain information that is needed to prepare the next
Section 508 report. Enclosed with the memorandum are instructions for the
survey, including the survey
questions.
2004 Self-Evaluation Survey and Report
- In January 2004, the
Department of Justice issues a memorandum (HTML, PDF) noticing heads of all federal
departments and agencies that the Department of Justice will conduct a
survey in order to obtain information that is needed to prepare the next
Section 508 report. Enclosed with the memorandum are instructions for the
survey, including the survey questions.
- The Department of
Justice did not publish a report based on the results of the 2004 survey data.
2001 Self-Evaluation Survey and Report
- On January 18, 2001,
the Department of Justice issues a memorandum (HTML,
PDF) noticing all federal agency chief
information officers that the Department will conduct a survey in order to
obtain information that is needed to prepare the next Section 508 report. Enclosed
with the memorandum are the following documents:

1999 Self-Evaluation Survey and Report
- In April 1999, the
Attorney General sent a package of detailed self-evaluation materials and
resource guides to federal departments and agencies to conduct the first
Executive Brach-wide Section 508 self-evaluation.
