The potential for DNA to exonerate, as well as convict offenders, has led to specific State statutes to allow for postconviction DNA testing under certain circumstances, even after the convicted person has exhausted all appeals. The motions allowed and the processes being created under these new laws allow judges broader authority to order or admit DNA evidence in such cases.

The Denver District Attorney has collected cases involving postconviction claims for relief based on DNA evidence.
