Rangel Recognizes National Senior Health & Fitness Day

New York, NY - Congressman Charles B. Rangel released the following statement in recognition of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, which takes place on the last Wednesday of the month of May:

"This May marks the 49th anniversary of Older Americans month, culminating with the 19th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day on May 30th. Older Americans continue to provide wisdom and insight to our communities while maintaining active, dynamic and vigorous lives - National Senior Health & Fitness Day embodies this spirit of vitality.

A healthy lifestyle complete with physical fitness becomes increasingly important as an individual ages. Consistent and regular exercise can mitigate the incidence and effects of common health issues, such as stroke, hypertension, and diabetes. New York's population of 3.4 million seniors can benefit greatly from a renewed focus on strengthened physical health and wellness. I encourage all seniors to participate in this fun and exciting day of activities.

Seniors in our congressional district are healthier as a result of outstanding programs and services provided by these organizations: the New York City Department for the Aging, the Central Harlem Senior Centers and Citizens Care Daycare Inc. I am grateful to their contributions and efforts to make senior health a priority.

I am a proud member of the Congressional Task Force on Seniors which promotes public awareness of policies related to the improvement of older American's health. As chairman emeritus of the Ways and Means Committee I will oppose any legislation that seeks to burden our seniors with extra costs. I alongside my Democratic colleagues in protecting Social Security and Medicare from Republican attempts to cut funds for these vital programs. We are committed to maintaining and improving health services for older Americans."
