Frequently Asked Questions

How are programs selected?

AFRTS acquires 90 percent of U.S. prime-time series based off TV ratings and periodic surveys. AFN Korea presents a representative sample of TV programs presented on stateside commercial, Public Broadcasting, and cable networks.

How can I get AFN Korea back on my Korean cable provider channel lineup?

The decision to not carry AFN Korea is one that is made by your local Korean Cable Operator. There are dozens of Korean cable operators throughout Seoul and we have no information on which CATV companies serve specific areas and no influence or jurisdiction regarding their programming.

How can I get more AFN channels?

If residing on base, sign up through your MWR cable point of contact. Off-base residents can lease a Direct-to-Home system/AFN decoders through the Army & Air Force Exchange Service to access six AFN channels (AFN News, AFN Sports, AFN Spectrum, AFN Atlantic, AFN Pacific, AFN Movie, AFN Family, AFN Xtra and The Pentagon Channel).

Can you get more (or less) religious programming?
The Armed Forces Chaplains' Board in association with AFRTS selects all religious programs. Matters of religion are areas of great passion. This coordination is designed to provide fairness to listeners and viewers of all faiths.

Can I get a copy of a show that aired recently?

Our regulations and copyright laws do not allow us to copy and hold programs for later use or re-use.

Can I get a copy of AFN Korea news story?

Yes, there is a download feature for every story posted onto the AFN Korea website and you can go to AFN Korea YouTube Page.

Where can I get the most updated TV programming schedules?

You can see the most recent schedules by visiting myafn.net.

Why do fillers/commercial spots vary in quality?

Some are generated by production facilities in Hollywood and others are recorded locally. The difference in available technology and techniques produce a different look and texture.

What about Operational Security?

AFN Korea keeps OPSEC in mind when reporting information to our audience. We are aware that others are watching our programs who are not our intended viewers. The information we broadcast has usually been released already or cleared by appropriate public affairs offices.

Why do you give the score of a game you'll be showing later?

Scores are shown by whomever is broadcasting the event we are showing. There is no way we can edit or delete these references from programming. We have no control over these programs and advise that you avoid programming that might have the score listed.

Why don't you broadcast stateside commercials?

DoD regulation prohibits AFRTS stations from airing commercial advertising. Our programming is supplied by producers for practically nothing. They do it willingly because it supports the military, but also keeps DoD's promise not to make profit on the deal.

Where do you get your spot announcements?

Contractors in the U.S produce many spots. Locally, AFN Korea generates spots on issues of importance to our audience members as identified by commanders throughout USFK.

Why do AFRTS spots insult my intelligence?

They are not intended to do that. However, not everyone understands things on the same level. Spots are produced to help everyone understand important issues.

What function does Community Calendar serve?

Each affiliate station in Korea serves different communities and installations. Announcements that are approved through authorized agencies are broadcast through our Network HQ at Yongsan. The additional information for other areas gives everyone a chance to attend community events and use services at other bases on the peninsula.

Why can't I get AFN Korea TV?

All host nations authorize transmitter locations, power and other guidelines to avoid interference with other TV signals and electronic equipment. We spread the signal as much as possible to cover areas where DoD personnel are concentrated. If residing outside the area of concentration, we suggest looking into the Direct-to-Home (DTH) satellite service.

Is AFN Korea responsible for the TV signal?

AFN Korea and the 1st Signal Brigade share joint responsibility of all AFN Korea broadcasts. AFN Korea is responsible for the programming and internal quality of the signal. Once the signal leaves the AFN Korea, the 1st Signal Brigade is responsible for all delivery systems and quality of broadcast signals.

What radio services does AFN Korea provide?

The network radio HQ in Seoul provides a mix of live sports, news and information as well as pre-recorded and satellite music programming on our AM and FM channels. Each affiliate stations hosts local morning shows with live DJs. These programs feature music matching the network's format, highlighting local events and announcements of community interest.

Can you play more of my kind of music?

We only have one FM and one AM channel (unless you lease DTH). We attempt to program for the majority of our audience. Most of the music broadcast features a mix of current hits, classic rock, Top 40, urban and rock music. Our AM channel features news, sports, talk, oldies, and country music.

Can I get a copy of a song from your library?

Unfortunately, no. The agreements that allow AFRTS stations to use copyright materials directs that AFN Korea use music for official AFRTS broadcasts.

Can you play a song if I give it to you?

We can only use music acquired by AFRTS.

Why is it so hard to get good FM reception?

FM signals don't bounce everywhere like AM signals do. FM is more line-of-sight, which means if there are obstructions or obstacles between your location and the AFN Korea FM antenna, such as buildings or hills, you're not going to get much. If this is the case, it may be necessary to connect the radio to an external antenna to improve your signal.
