National Data
August 15, 2012
The "Standard Fixed Assets Tables" and the "Detailed Fixed Assets Tables" have
been updated to incorporate the results from the 2012 annual revision of the
national income and product accounts (NIPAs). Revisions to the estimates are
limited to 2009-forward. The "Standard Fixed Assets Tables" present estimates of
net stocks, depreciation, fixed investment, other changes in volume of assets,
and the average age of net stocks for fixed assets (private residential and
nonresidential fixed assets and government fixed assets) and consumer durable
goods. The "Detailed Fixed Assets Tables" present additional detailed estimates
of net stocks, depreciation, and investment by type and by industry (for
nonresidential fixed assets only). Also included are detailed price indexes for
nonresidential fixed assets and implied rates of depreciation for selected
aggregates by industry.
Reconciliation tables for the fixed asset accounts (FAAs) have also been updated
to incorporate the results from the 2012 annual revision of the NIPAs. The
private fixed investment reconciliation tables present the relationship between
private fixed investment in the FAAs and corresponding items in the NIPAs. An
additional reconciliation table presents the relationship between consumer
durable goods in the NIPAs to the corresponding items in the FAAs.
October 3, 2011
A new table is available that presents the relationship between consumer durable goods
in the National Income and Product Accounts to the corresponding items in the Fixed Asset Accounts.
September 6, 2011
The "Detailed Fixed Assets Tables" have been updated to incorporate the results
from the 2011 annual revision of the national income and product accounts
(2008-2010) and the benchmarking of private fixed investment by industry and by
type of asset (1998-2010). Chain-type quantity index levels are potentially
revised for the entire historical period; however, revisions to percent change
in the indexes are limited to 1998-forward. These tables present detailed
estimates of net stocks, depreciation, and investment by type and by industry
(for nonresidential fixed assets only) for private residential and
nonresidential fixed assets, and consumer durable goods. Also included are
detailed price indexes for nonresidential fixed assets and implied rates of
depreciation for selected aggregates by industry.

The "Standard Fixed Assets Tables" and "Private Fixed Investment Reconciliation
Tables" have been updated to incorporate the results from the 2011 annual
revision of the national income and product accounts (2008-2010), the
benchmarking of private fixed investment by industry and by type of asset (1998-
2010), and the incorporation of an improved methodology for converting estimates
of government-owned structures classified by type to structures classified by
function (1997-2010). Chain-type quantity index levels are potentially revised
for the entire historical period; however, revisions to percent change in the indexes
are limited to 1998-forward for private fixed assets and 1997-forward for
government fixed assets. The "Standard Fixed Assets Tables" present estimates
of net stocks, depreciation, fixed investment, other changes in volume of
assets, and the average age of net stocks for fixed assets and consumer durable
goods. Corresponding "Detailed Fixed Assets Tables" are currently unavailable,
but will be posted in the near future. The "Private Fixed Investment
Reconciliation Tables" present the relationship between private fixed investment
in the Fixed Assets Accounts and corresponding items in the National Income and
Product Accounts.
Fixed Assets
BEA’s fixed assets accounts includes a wide array of statistics on both fixed assets, which are used continuously in processes of production for an extended period of time, and consumer durables, which are generally defined as tangible products that can be stored or inventoried and that have an average life of at least three years.
Statistics on net stocks, depreciation (consumption of fixed capital), “other changes in volume of assets,” and the average age of net stocks are available, beginning with 1925; estimates of fixed investment are available, beginning with 1901. These statistics are available by industry, by legal form of organization, and by asset type.
