Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on H.R. 436, the Protect Medical Innovation Act of 2012, to repeal the Medical Device Tax provision of the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”), a 2.3 percent tax which will be imposed on the sale of medical devices by manufacturers or importers. Today’s vote marks the 30th time that House Republicans have voted to defund, dismantle, or repeal a piece of the law. Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon issued the following statement regarding his vote of support:
“No one can forget when then Speaker Nancy Pelosi remarked of the government takeover of health care: “The American people will just have to wait until we pass it to see what is in it,”” said Congressman McKeon. “Well, we now know what is in the 2,700 page, big-government monstrosity: provision after provision of job killing taxes and unparalleled government expansion.
”While we all agree that there are serious problems with our nation’s health care system that need reform, Obamacare is simply not the right way to fix those problems. Obamacare has become one of the biggest barriers to job creation in this country because of the expense and uncertainty it has put on the shoulders of small businesses across the country.
“The Medical Device Tax is a threat to tech manufacturers across the nation, and only encourages layoffs, slashed salaries, and more businesses fleeing overseas. The last thing American businesses need in this already tough economy is more taxes.”
Today’s bill is a part of the
House Republican Plan for America’s Job Creators to remove the stifling uncertainty and economic burdens this Administration has put on American businesses.
