Population Projections and Characteristics of Older Hispanic Americans 65+

The older Hispanic population is living longer, following the growth trend of older Americans. According to the U.S. Census, in 2009 Hispanic persons made up 7.0 percent of the older population. By 2050, the percentage of the older population that is Hispanic is projected to increase to 19.8 percent of the older population. By 2019, the 65+ Hispanic population is projected to become the largest racial/ethnic minority in this age group.

Characteristics of older Hispanic Americans include the following:

  • In 2009, 70 percent of Hispanic elders lived in four states: California (26.5%); Texas (18.0%); Florida (15.2%); and New York (8.9%).
  • In 2008, 67 percent of Hispanic older men lived with their spouses and 41 percent of older Hispanic women lived with their spouses.
  • Data of the U.S. Census Bureau also shows that the percent of Hispanic older adults living with other relatives is about twice that of the total older population.
