Running Out of Time

Running Out of Time
With only 15 days remaining until federal funding for highways, public transportation, and safety programs expires, good-paying American jobs are hanging in the balance. The U.S. Senate passed a transportation bill, by a bipartisan vote of 74 to 22, that would create or save more than 2 million jobs, but Speaker John Boehner and his Republican colleagues refuse to bring it to the House floor. It’s time for them to put Americans to work, invest in road, rail, transit, and highway construction, rebuild our infrastructure, and strengthen our economy by holding an immediate vote on the Senate-passed bill.

Millions of college students and their families are also facing uncertainty with student loan interest rates set to double on July 1st, but the only vote House Republicans have taken to prevent this disastrous hike does so at the expense of women’s health. House Democrats introduced legislation to keep college students’ loan rates from doubling and reduce the deficit by ending unwarranted tax breaks to Big Oil. As we work to grow the economy, we must invest in the strength and future of our workforce by keeping college affordable.

High Tech Jobs for San Francisco
San Francisco has long been a center of new technologies, new entrepreneurs, and new ideas. On Thursday, the Department of Labor announced a Workforce Innovation Fund grant of $3 million for the City and County of San Francisco to support and enhance innovative employment and training opportunities. The announcement builds on the recent $5 million grant for TechSF to fund education, job training, and placement in the local IT sector.

The investment will ensure that all San Franciscans have the tools, training, and resources to take part in the new economy, benefit from the tech boom, support their families, and contribute to our economic growth. With these funds, we will be able to cultivate local talent, connect job-seekers to the skills and data they need to find work, and help employers locate and hire qualified workers. Building on the recent $5 million grant to TechSF, we will enhance the public-private partnership between the city and local tech companies with industry-based solutions that work.

In Case You Missed It
On Wednesday, my office held a “Congress on Your Corner” at the Visitacion Valley Branch of the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL). Many San Franciscans attended to express their views on federal policy and receive assistance in resolving issues with federal agencies. This spring, my office hosted several Congress on Your Corner events at the San Francisco Public Library (SFPL) branches, including the Excelsior Branch; helping attendees address problems with Social Security, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Medicare, Veterans Affairs and difficulties with immigration and visa applications. My next Congress on Your Corner events will occur in the fall. Please visit my website or contact my office at (415) 556-4862 if you are experiencing difficulty with a federal agency.

Please feel free to forward this information to your family and friends. To learn more about these efforts, to express your views, or to sign up for email updates, please visit my website. I am also on Twitter at http://twitter.com/NancyPelosi.

Sincerely,

Member of Congress
