Stopping Violence Against Women, Protecting our Students

May 4, 2012

Stopping Violence Against Women
Millions of American women and children are counting on Congress to pass the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Last week, a bipartisan coalition in the Senate voted to reauthorize VAWA and provide critical, life-saving support to victims of violence. Democrats have proposed legislation that mirrors the bill passed by the Senate. Both bills:

  • Extend defense against domestic abuse, sexual assault, and stalking;
  • Expand the classes of victims protected – including Native Americans and the LGBT community;
  • And Ensure protections for immigrants affected by domestic violence.

Unfortunately, House Republicans next week are moving forward with a GOP version that weakens VAWA and limits protections of certain classes of individuals. It’s time for them to stop playing games with the safety and security of America’s women and bring the bipartisan Senate bill up for a vote without further delay.

Congresswoman Pelosi's Floor Speech in the Reauthorization on the Violence Against Women Act

Congresswoman Pelosi urges House Republicans to act to prevent student loan interest rates from doubling.

Protecting our Students
Unless Congress acts, the interest rates on more than 7 million students will double to 6.8 percent on July 1st. Failure to act now will add $6.3 billion to students’ debt burden in one year alone. Last week, House Republicans put forth a plan to stop the increase but paid for it by totally eliminating the Prevention and Public Health Fund–undermining the well-being of America’s women and children. Women, in particular, will benefit from the Prevention Fund, which would provide for hundreds of thousands of screenings for breast and cervical cancer. House Democrats have put forth a bill that protects our nation’s students by eliminating tax breaks for Big Oil, which are unwarranted and unnecessary at a time of record profits.

Celebrating Asian Pacific Heritage Month
Asian Pacific Heritage Month is an opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of the AAPI community and the great diversity of our nation. Americans from Asia and the Pacific Islands have overcome persecution and prejudice to serve as leaders and patriots.

The Affordable Care Act, a landmark accomplishment for Democrats in Congress, continues to provide benefits to the AAPI community, and indeed all Americans. By helping end health disparities and tackling public health concerns like Hepatitis B, this legislation is creating a healthier America.

As the representative from San Francisco, I feel particular pride to represent one of the largest, strongest, and most vibrant AAPI communities in the country in Congress. Asian and Pacific Islander Americans will continue to help shape and define our future, and this month in particular we celebrate their rich contributions and vibrant communities.
