Rep. Wasserman Schultz Statement on State of the Union Address

(Washington, DC)  --  Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (FL-20) made the following statement in response to President Bush's State of the Union Address:

"Tonight President Bush had an opportunity to provide the Congress, the American people and the global community with a vision and plan of action for Safety, Security and Innovation as we move ahead in the 21st century.  Unfortunately, the President failed to do so and instead he showed a lack of understanding of the challenges facing America's working families.

"We need more than strong language. Words are meaningless without action. We need to see leadership.  Last year we were told we were 'addicted to foreign oil.' This year we were told that 'for too long our nation has been dependent on foreign oil' yet we actually saw the President cut funding for alternative energy research in the past year.

"President Bush continues to propose simplistic solutions to long term problems.  While I was pleased to see that the President acknowledged we need to address the fact that more than 47 million people are uninsured in America, I was disappointed that his solution to this crisis is providing a tax deduction for families that can't afford it already.  The proposal he makes demonstrates a lack of understanding of why people remain uninsured, or underinsured in America."
