Congressman Doug Lamborn today introduced H.R. 1076, a bill that would prohibit all federal funding of National Public Radio (NPR).

“This is an exciting and significant step forward in the ongoing effort to protect taxpayer dollars from supporting programs that are fully capable of standing on their own. Taxpayers should not be on the hook for something that is widely available in the private market.

H.R. 1076 would allow the local affiliate stations to use federal funds for administrative expenses associated with their day-to-day operations. 

The House is expected to vote on H.R. 1076 this Thursday, March 17, 2011.

Note: This afternoon the House passed a three-week Continuing Resolution (CR) to fund the federal government through April 9, 2011. That bill contains $50 million in cuts for NPR’s parent organization, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).  H.R. 1, the CR passed by the House last month, rescinded all federal funding for CPB through the end of this fiscal year. The Senate rejected that funding bill and has yet to offer an alternative. Congressman Lamborn will continue to push for the elimination of taxpayer dollars for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting through the annual appropriations process.

Background: Congressman Lamborn has led the effort in the House to eliminate all federal funding for CPB.  He has introduced legislation in both the 111th and 112th Congresses.
