ENERGY

As a nation, we must do everything possible to lessen our dependence on expensive, foreign sources of energy. To accomplish this goal, we must develop alternative and renewable fuel sources while drilling for more oil and natural gas on and off our shores and expanding our use of nuclear energy. I have consistently supported legislation that provides incentives to the private sector to develop ethanol (fuel made from corn), biodiesel (fuel made from soybeans), electric, hydrogen and flex-fuel (runs on gasoline or ethanol) vehicles, clean-coal technology, wind, solar, geothermal and hydroelectric power. All of these technologies will promote a cleaner environment and provide our nation with renewable energy sources for generations to come.

In fact, much of the research and demonstration of our future energy sources is occurring within the 16th Congressional District of Illinois. Lena and Rochelle are home to ethanol plants. Farmers in Pearl City and Cedarville utilize methane digesters that power their operations with animal waste.  The future Burpee Museum-Discovery Center Museum Campus will employ new wind, solar and geothermal energy technologies. The Freedom Field Initiative at the Chicago-Rockford International Airport is researching and demonstrating the viability of using hydrogen, wind, and methane digesters as alternative sources of energy.

It is exciting to represent an area that is so involved in the research and development of our future energy technologies. I will continue to support our local efforts and national policies designed to promote alternative and renewable energy and eliminate our dependence on expensive, foreign oil.
