Terry Van Mead Sentenced to 130 Months in Prison for Failing to Register as a Sex Offender and Possession of Stolen Firearms
The Office of the United States Attorney for the District of Vermont stated that on October 2, 2012, Terry Van Mead, 36, formerly of Rutland County, was sentenced to 130 months in prison, having pled guilty to charges of failing to register as sex offender and possession of stolen firearms. United States District Judge William K. Sessions, III, sitting in Burlington, also sentenced Mead to 5 years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
In arriving at the sentence, Judge Sessions cited the seriousness of the Mead's offenses and his criminal record. Mead faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison on each charge. Judge Sessions sentenced him to 65 months on each conviction and ordered that the sentences run consecutively.
Court records indicate that Mead was convicted in 2005 in New York of Criminal Sexual Acts with a 15-year-old girl. That felony conviction required him to register as a sex offender and update his registration for 10 years. Mead moved to Vermont in the early summer of 2010, and failed to notify the sex offender registry of his new address. During his arrest in October 2010, law enforcement discovered that Mead had taken possession of 14 stolen firearms, and had sold some to local gun shops.
The investigation was led by the United States Marshals Service and ATF. Assistant United States Attorney Christina E. Nolan prosecuted the case. Mead was represented by Assistant Federal Public Defender Steven Barth, Esq.
