Foreign Service Youth Foundation

The Foreign Service Youth Foundation (FSYF) is a 501 (c.)(3) non-profit organization providing advocacy, information, education and training opportunities and programs for Foreign Service youth and their families.  FSYF addresses the challenge of the internationally mobile lifestyle and the effect it has on children. This support is extended to youth and their parents in the Washington, DC area, as well as at posts abroad. Foreign Service Youth Foundation general brochure

The Foreign Service Youth Foundation (FSYF) was established in 1989 with seed money from the Una Chapman Cox Foundation and through the collaborative efforts of the Department of State's Family Liaison Office (FLO), the Associates of the American Foreign Service Worldwide (AAFSW), and the Foreign Service Institute's Overseas Briefing Center (OBC).

The FSYF participates in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) and you may designate CFC #8488 in support of Foreign Service young people.  FSYFdepends on private contributions to continue to offer innovative programs for FS youth. 

Activities for Foreign Service Youth

FSYF offers a number of activities for recently returned FS youth, including an annual Welcome Back picnic every September. Other events and activities, including those involving community service, are offered throughout the year.

Around the World in a Lifetime (AWAL) - High School
Established in 1983, assists young people re-entering American life from an overseas tour and also helps prepare youth going overseas.  Includes training, social events and a community service program for Foreign Service teenagers.

  • Wings of Awal, a monthly newsletter produced by teens
  • Organizes social, educational and leadership programs, especially for reentry and going overseas
  • Organizes monthly community service events

Globe Trotters - Middle School
Established in 1998, provides support and friendship for preteens.

Diplokids - ages 5 to 10
Established in 2003, Diplokids provides a fun, family activity group to support younger Foreign Service Kids.

  • Seminars for parents on raising internationally mobile children
  • Yahoo Group for Foreign Service parents  

Foreign Service Youth Awards and Contests

  • 2007 - 2008 Clements International Foreign Service Youth Award for Community Service Deadline for receipt of nominations is Friday, April 25, 2008. More information and nomination procedure
  • 2008 Foreign Service Youth Foundation Young Diplomat's Essay Contest.  Essays must be emailed or postmarked by April 15, 2008.  If mailed, the essay must be received by May 1, 2008.  Contest rules and submission procedures
