Webster Statement on the National Debt Passing $16 Trillion

Orange County, Sep 5 - U.S. Representative Daniel Webster (FL-08) issued the following statement in response to the national debt exceeding $16 trillion dollars, reiterating the need for the President and Senate to support a Cut, Cap, and Balance initiative:

“Yesterday, a disturbing moment in American history occurred – our debt reached $16 trillion. That level of debt consumes more than our nation’s entire annual economic output. As Central Floridians are struggling to make ends meet for their families, Washington continues to stick its head in the sand and ignore the fact that we are careening toward a national disaster. With 23 million Americans unemployed or underemployed, it is clear that Washington’s spending problems are derailing our economy and jeopardizing our children’s future.

“The time is now to focus on a plan that cuts current spending, caps future spending, and balances the budget. I cosponsored the House-passed Cut, Cap and Balance Act, which would do just that. Regrettably, that bill, like countless other job-creating bills that have passed the House of Representatives, lies dormant in a Senate that appears unwilling to act to avert this crisis. With four straight years of budget deficits exceeding $1 trillion and each American’s share of our national debt topping $50,000, it’s time to stop talking and time to put that plan into action.

Our nation is in desperate need of reforms that free our children and grandchildren from the burden of debt and move our great country forward,” stated Webster.
