A Powerful Workforce Begins with a Strong Education
Education continues to be a main focus for Senator Lugar throughout Indiana. His education plan gives Hoosier students the opportunity to work in successful careers in always changing technological and global communities.
The plan:
- Give students an early opportunity for future success by focusing on the basics along with helping those students who struggle.
- Support parents, teachers, and school administrators who offer innovative and evidence based local solutions for students because they are best equipped to decide how to address the unique needs of each student.
- Eliminate excessive federal regulations on states and school districts
- Ensure students have had the experience necessary for college or a career before they graduate high school
- Stress science, technology, math, and engineering in Hoosier classrooms to ensure students receive the education necessary to compete in the global technology dominated economy.
Once Hoosier students are ready for the workforce, we need to enable them to be more successful.
This can be accomplished by:
- Encouraging local job training programs
- Reauthorizing the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) to quicken the growth of the federal workforce development and related programs
Senator Lugar has been deeply invested in education from his first days on the Indianapolis School Board in the 1960s, through his two terms as Mayor of Indianapolis, his time as a professor at the University of Indianapolis, and his service as one of Indiana's two United States Senators.
He believes a quality education is vital to an individual’s personal success, and the education attainment levels of our population affects everything from our local economies to our national security on a global scale.
Education is more than simply mastering the "three R’s." While reading, writing and arithmetic are cornerstones of a sound education, other issues such as safe and secure schools, a student’s family and home environment, and the community support system - including health and nutrition - all play a powerful role in shaping the educational outcome of each student.
Through the Lugar Education Patriot award, Senator Lugar and Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction Dr. Tony Bennett honor a school, school corporation, or education leader who has demonstrated leadership and initiative in improving the academic achievement and career preparation of Indiana students.
In an effort to recognize dedicated educators statewide, Senator Lugar has partnered with the Indiana State Teacher’s Association (ISTA) on the Favorite Teacher Project to spotlight memorable teachers.
EducateIndiana offers a collection of essays and reference materials that explore the many issues in education that currently face Hoosier parents, teachers, students and policymakers.
