Lugar Cosponsors “Feed America Day 2011” Resolution
On November 9, 2011, Senator Lugar cosponsored a resolution to recognize November 17, 2011 as "Feed America Day". The resolution, introduced by Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT), recognizes the spirit of selfless giving that the United States was founded upon and aims to address our nation's hunger issues by encouraging the people of the United States to sacrifice two meals on Thursday, November 17, 2011 and donate the money that would have been spent on that food to a religious or charitable organization of their choice for the purpose of feeding the hungry.
Lugar’s Hoosiers Fighting Hunger Collects 266,091 Pounds of Food for Statewide Food Pantries
On October 27, 2011, Senator Lugar announced that the third annual Hoosiers Fighting Hunger statewide food drive collected 266,091 pounds of food for Indiana food banks and local pantries because of the generosity of Hoosiers. The food collected will amount to more than 221,000 meals for Hoosiers in need.
“Each year I am amazed by the level of generosity shownby Hoosiers during the Hoosiers Fighting Hunger food drive and this year is no different,” said Lugar. “More than 7,300 meals per day were collected during the month of September and will help feed Hoosiers in need this holiday season. I sincerely appreciate our partnership with Kroger, Marsh and Walmart for Hoosiers Fighting Hunger. In visits to each of the stores last month, I witnessed Hoosiers’ generous spirit exemplified by the large stacks of food ready for their local communities.”
