PLANTATION, Fla. (WSVN) -- Government officials are warning South Florida residents to get ready to survive a storm this season.

Next Friday will mark the official start of the 2012 hurricane season. "A week from today the official 2012 hurricane season begins," said Florida US Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Dem.). "Although, mother nature didn't get the memo and kicked off the season about a week and a half early."

Government leaders and experts gathered at the Broward County Emergency Operations Center for the anticipated nine to 15 storms that forecasters predicted for this year. Four to eight of them could turn into hurricanes. "The fact that this will be less active then last year in no way implies that there won't be land falls," said N.O.A.A. Dr. Robert Atlas. "In fact, many seasons with lower hurricane counts often have more landfalls."

A survey showed about 45 percent of residents living within 30 miles of the coast do not think it is a problem.

Residents are urged to stock for at least three days worth with water, food and necessary medications and also come up with a plan in case a storm strikes. "Getting a plan is easier than most people think it is you. Go on to the website floridadisaster.org and that will provide you with a plan," said Florida National Guard Col. William Beiswenger.

Boy Scout Jacob Claytor said residents need to prepare no matter what. "Be prepared," said Claytor. "You have to go out to the stores, get your food, get your water. You just can't expect the government to really do everything for you."
