Chabot Votes Against Debt-Limit Increase
05/31/11 WASHINGTON- On Tuesday May 31, the U.S. House of Representatives rejected H.R. 1954, a bill to implement the President's request to increase the statutory limit on the public debt. Congressman Steve Chabot (OH-1) voted against the bill and released the following statement regarding his vote:
"The rejection tonight by the House of the debt limit bill provides a strong indication that the House will not pass legislation to increase the debt limit that does not include dramatic spending cuts—with even a significant number of Democrats voting against it. And as we continue the debt limit debate in Congress, I hope it is now abundantly clear to the President and Senate Democrats that the time has come for us to end Washington’s spending-driven debt crisis. The American people expect us to be serious about ending the wasteful spending practices that have produced record deficits and more than $14 trillion in debt. At the very least, any attempt to increase the debt limit should include significant budget cuts and enforceable spending caps."
