MAJOR ECONOMIC INDICATORS
September 14, 2012
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for
All Urban Consumers increased 0.6 percent in August after
being unchanged in July. The index for all items less food
and energy rose 0.1 percent in August, the same increase as
in July.

Wages and salaries rose 0.4 percent and benefit costs rose 0.6 percent for civilian
workers, seasonally adjusted, from March to June 2012. Over the year, compensation
rose 1.7 percent, wages and salaries 1.7 percent, and benefits 2.1 percent.

The unemployment rate decreased to 7.8 percent in September, and
total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 114,000. Employment
increased in health care and in transportation and warehousing
but changed little in most other major industries.

The Producer Price Index for finished goods rose 1.7 percent in August. This increase followed
advances of 0.3 percent in July and 0.1 percent in June. In August, prices for finished goods less
foods and energy advanced 0.2 percent.

Productivity increased 2.2 percent in the nonfarm business sector in second
quarter 2012; unit labor costs rose 1.5 percent (seasonally adjusted annual
rates). In manufacturing, productivity grew 0.1 percent and unit labor costs
increased 0.8 percent.

Real average hourly earnings fell 0.7 percent in August, seasonally adjusted, due to unchanged average hourly earnings combined with a 0.6 percent gain in the CPI-U. Real average weekly earnings fell 0.6 percent over the month.

U.S. import prices rose 0.7 percent in August, after declining 0.7 percent the previous
month. The August increase was the first advance in overall import prices since a 1.4
percent rise in March. Export prices also increased in August, rising 0.9 percent following
a 0.4 percent advance in July.
