This series consists of over 18,000 annotated U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quadrangle maps used by a number of contractors primarily during Phase II compilation of the National Mapping Service's Geographic Names Inventory System (GNIS) Features database, 1982 - 91. The map annotations report new place names, structures, terrain features, and roads, as well as historic feature names not in current use. The annotations made on the maps are significant in that only a small percentage of feature names are printed on the published USGS Quadrangle Map series. Accessioned were two large series of photographs and slides from the Maritime Administration, 1940s to 1999. There is a series of 2,000 color slides (357-NS & SS) that cover subjects such as locks, charts and maps, and ships and boats. Included in this series are photographs of various U.S. waterways, such as the Columbia, Mississippi, and Ohio rivers. Also documented is the visit of the Russian Inland Waterway Delegation to the U.S. Another series of approximately 5,000 photographs (357-G) dating from the 1940s to 1955 is from the Office of Public Affairs relating to the Maritime's mobilization and promotion of the Victory Fleet shipbuilding program and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Officer Training Program during World War II, as well as USMC's and MARAD's implementation of ship construction, re-conversion, and surplus property disposal programs.
