Ghana

AGOA Status: Ghana is eligible for AGOA this year. It also qualifies for textile and apparel benefits.

Trade Agreements: The U.S. and Ghana signed a Trade & Investment Framework Agreement (TIFA) in 1999. The fifth U.S.-Ghanaian TIFA Council Meeting was held in January 2008. Later that year, the United States and Mauritius launched bilateral investment treaty negotiations. That year, the U.S. and Ghana also opened exploratory discussions on the possibility of negotiating a bilateral investment treaty (BIT).

Ghana was the United States' 77th largest goods export market in 2011.

U.S. goods exports to Ghana in 2011 were $1.2 billion, up 20.5% ($203 million) from 2010.

The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2011 were: Machinery ($270 million), Vehicles ($253 million), Mineral Fuel (oil) ($192 million), Cereals (rice and wheat) ($65 million), and iron and Steel Products) ($48 million).

U.S. agricultural exports in 2011 were $111 million. Leading categories include: rice ($52 million) and poultry meat ($34 million).

Imports

Ghana was the United States' 86th largest supplier of goods imports in 2011.

U.S. goods imports from Ghana totaled $779 million in 2011, a 184.9% increase ($506 million) from 2010.

The five largest import categories in 2011 were: Mineral Fuel (oil) ($441 million), Cocoa ($269 million), Rubber ($19 million), Wood ($18 million), and Vegetables (yams) ($7 million).

U.S. agricultural imports in 2011 were $300 million. Leading categories include: cocoa beans ($221 million), and cocoa paste and cocoa butter ($48 million).

Trade Balance

The U.S. goods trade surplus with Ghana was $414 million in 2011, a 42.2% decrease ($302 million) from 2010.
