The National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) serves as the credentialing and certification division of AARST and is recognized as the nation’s leading certification program for radon professionals.
Currently, AARST-NRPP has over 2,600 certified professionals qualified in measurement, mitigation, and as radon laboratories.
AARST-NRPP Certification is an ongoing effort that requires bi-annual documentation of expertise and performance, representing a high level of skill, knowledge and professionalism.

Primary Certifications
Residential Measurement Provider: Standard Services
At A Glance:
Places and retrieves measurement devices for analysis by a certified laboratory.
Individuals holding the Residential Measurement Provider certification have demonstrated knowledge of U.S. EPA radon measurement protocols for the placement and retrieval of radon measurement devices. They have also demonstrated knowledge of the proper interpretation of results obtained in residential settings.
These individuals are authorized to place devices that are analyzed by a AARST-NRPP certified analytical laboratory. Depending upon the location of the laboratory where the devices are analyzed, specific shipping arrangements that have been established, results are not generally available immediately upon conclusion of the radon test.
Although this classification is specific for measurements in homes, it does not preclude the ability to conduct radon measurement surveys in large buildings, or to take samples for radon in water, provided that the appropriate protocols are followed.
Residential Measurement Provider: Standard & Analytical Services
At A Glance:
Places and retrieves measurement devices for analysis by a certified laboratory, and/or analyzes specific measurement devices on behalf of a client (but not for other measurement professionals).
Individuals holding a Residential Measurement Provider for Standard and Analytical Services have demonstrated knowledge of U.S. EPA radon measurement protocols for the placement and retrieval of radon measurement devices. They have also demonstrated knowledge of the proper interpretation of results obtained in residential settings.
Furthermore, these individuals possess and analyze radon measurement devices.
Depending upon the specific device, this may allow for rapid provision of test results.
The testing professional may also be able to characterize trends in radon concentration and determine unusual conditions arising from such influences as weather changes or occupant tampering of a test.
To obtain this additional classification, individuals follow strict quality assurance and quality control guidelines and device specific protocols, and calibrate each instrument annually. The classification is specific to devices with which an individual has demonstrated proficiency.

Residential Mitigation Provider
At A Glance:
Works to reduce the radon levels in the home through various approved remediation techniques.
Individuals holding the Residential Mitigation Provider certification have demonstrated knowledge of radon mitigation techniques as applied to residential structures.
Although this classification is specific for reducing radon in buildings similar to homes, it does not preclude the individual’s ability to apply these skills to larger buildings.
In all cases the consumer is advised to verify experience, references, licenses, and skills for the nature of work to be performed.
Certified radon mitigation service providers have also agreed to abide by local laws as well as the mitigation techniques detailed in the U.S. Radon Mitigation Standards.
Analytical Laboratory
At A Glance:
Distributes and analyzes radon measurement devices to certified measurement and mitigation firms or to the general public.
The Analytical Laboratory Certification is for firms that analyze radon and radon decay measurement devices on behalf of residential measurement providers and/or the public.
A laboratory must designate an individual as the Responsible Party who is responsible for quality assurance and quality control aspects of the operation of the laboratory.
The Responsible Party must be AARST-NRPP certified as a residential measurement provider.
Advanced Certificates
(Prerequisite: Must hold a current Primary Certification)
AARST-NRPP Advanced Certificates are specialty certificates that are tied to a primary certification. Earning an Advanced Certificate indicates additional proficiency and education in one or more of three specialized areas: radon resistant new construction and/or multifamily testing and/or multifamily mitigation. Professionals who hold any primary certification, are eligible to pursue Advanced Certificate coursework and submit a copy of the certificate to AARST-NRPP with a registration form. Once processed, the AARST-NRPP Advanced Certificate will appear in the Professional Search database, as an icon next to the certified professional’s name. MORE on Advanced Certificates
Multifamily Measurement
AARST-NRPP certified professionals who have attended and passed an approved Multifamily Measurement course and practicum session.
This certificate is in addition to the professional’s primary certification and covers specialized standards and protocols for properly testing multifamily buildings based on the AARST-ANSI Protocol for Measurement in Multifamily Buildings.
Multifamily Mitigation
AARST-NRPP certified professionals who have attended and passed an approved Multifamily Mitigaiton course and practicum session.
This certificate is in addition to the professional’s primary certification and covers specialized standards and procedures for mitigatiion on an entire multifamily buildings based on the AARST-ANSI
Radon Resistant New Construction
AARST-NRPP certified professionals who have attended and passed an approved Radon Resistant New Construction
course and practicum session.
This certificate is in addition to the professional’s primary certification and covers specialized standards for site preparation and construction of a new building with radon resistant features based on the AARST-ANSI
