OSF HPC Seminars
Brown Bag seminars held at NERSC's Oakland Scientific Facility. Some are open to NERSC users and some are restricted to NERSC staff. Public events will be listed on the NERSC events calendar.
Should NERSC use Cloud Storage?
In this presentation, the NERSC Storage Systems Group will discuss how three different cloud storage solutions that aim to provide durable scalable storage to consumers might look handling the current HPSS workload. The goal of the talk is to discuss the benefits and risks associated with the solutions to determine whether further investigation is warranted. Read More »

Using WebEx for Meetings and Training
NERSC has two WebEx accounts that can be used for holding remote meetings or webinars. I’ll discuss some of WebEx’s capabilities and use cases and show you how to reserve and start a meeting. Perhaps ironically, there will be no remote presentation. But bring your laptops so you can experience being both host and attendee. Read More »

Lorenz: Bringing HPC to the Web
Lorenz, a tool from LLNL, is a web based portal designed to support user interaction within a High Performance Computing environment. Lorenz builds on existing web paradigms using advanced JavaScript techniques and a RESTful web service API to make HPC easier and more accessible. Additionally, the Lorenz team has implemented the Simulation Input Markup Language (SIML) and interpreter which allows for the development of robust simulation interfaces through the use of only HTML. Advanced Materials for Computing and Storage
Presented by Catherine Jenkins, Berkeley Lab Advanced Light Source. - CMOS and related technologies will fail to keep pace with computing requirements by the end of the decade. This talk will muse on the design and characterization of materials for current and future problems of processing and storage, including but not limited to half-metallic ferro- and ferrimagnets for spintronics and topological insulators for quantum computing.
