 TITLE:               Outreach Communication Coordinator

LOCATION:         Regional Medical Library Division

SALARY:               Minimum:  $53,000; commensurate with experience

 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:  The Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Medical Library (SE/ARML), at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), Health Sciences and Human Services Library, seeks an experienced, energetic librarian who ensures an organized approach to the SE/A outreach services and communications by coordinating and facilitating outreach and promotional activities.  This librarian coordinates and facilitates SE/A exhibit program, regional outreach projects and subcontracts targeting health professionals, library advocacy, and consultation and training to health professionals and their associations. This coordinator assesses and responds to the information and educational needs of health care and health information professionals and the public; and markets and publicizes the services and products of the NLM and NN/LM. 

 RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversees outreach activities for the SE/A’s unaffiliated and minority health professionals.
  • Coordinates communication and promotional programs including national and regional exhibits, regional webinars, presentations at association meetings and exhibits, librarian advocacy, featured articles for SEA Currents and health professional associations contact.
  • Develops strategies and materials to promote use of NLM and NN/LM products and services to SE/A target populations such as health professionals, librarians and the general public.
  • Oversees the design of the traveling exhibit, outreach publicity, and promotional materials for use in SE/A outreach activities.
  • Staffs and recruits others to staff the national and regional exhibits.
  • Assists Outreach/Access Coordinator with hospital library advocacy programs.
  • Identifies and develops programs that focus on health professionals in specific populations and subject disciplines identified by NLM as high priorities such as unaffiliated health professionals, inner city health professionals, minority health professionals, etc.
  • Identifies and develops programs that focus on health professionals especially those serving specific populations or in subject disciplines identified by NLM as high priorities such as unaffiliated health professionals, inner city health professionals, minority health professionals, public health workforce, etc.
  • Provides demonstrations, training sessions, and exhibits featuring NLM databases and resources such as PubMed and MedlinePlus.  Consults on questions concerning NLM resources.
  • Works with the NLM National Training Center to schedule and publicize classes in the SE/A region. 
  • Works with health professional associations to ensure CME credits for SE/A courses when necessary.
  • Promotes NLM and NN/LM SE/A funding opportunities and assists potential applicants with applications and proposals; identifies other grant and funding opportunities for health professionals associations, health professionals and others.
  • Develops and implements outreach programs and training sessions that address the information needs of health professionals and health sciences librarians in the sub-region of Maryland, North Carolina, Puerto Rico, and South Carolina.
  • Presents information about NN/LM programs in training sessions, at NLM resources demonstrations, association meetings, exhibits, and other events as required.
  • Contributes articles to the regional electronic newsletter.
  • With other outreach coordinators, develops needs assessment tools and coordinates use in the region.
  • Participates in the development, evaluation and testing of NN/LM and NLM products and services.
  • With the Executive Director and other SE/A staff, represents the SE/A throughout the Region.
  • Promotes communication throughout the region by providing feedback and evaluations on products and services and projects, participating in teleconferences, and attending scheduled meetings.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  Required: ALA accredited MLS; minimum 3 years health sciences library experience; demonstrated experience with searching NLM databases, especially MEDLINE and MedlinePlus; demonstrated teaching and training experience; demonstrated excellent written and oral communications skills; demonstrated recent experience with library technology; able to set-up computers and exhibits; extensive travel; valid driver’s license. Preferred: Excellent interpersonal skills; knowledge or experience with: public health resources; instructional design and course development; evaluation; conducting research in information science or instructional design; project management; knowledge of NLM and NN/LM programs.

ENVIRONMENT:
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) campus is located in downtown Baltimore, blocks from Orioles Park at Camden Yards, Raven’s Stadium, and the Inner Harbor, a recreational waterfront destination. Forty-five miles north of Washington DC, Baltimore City and the surrounding metropolitan area are noted for high quality-of-life indicators offering historic parks, great neighborhoods, and world famous art collections, museums, theaters, and symphony orchestras. The city has easy access to public transportation systems, superior health care systems, and renowned university and educational resources.

The HS/HSL is the second largest medical school library on the East Coast, providing access to 372,794 bound volumes, 2800 unique electronic and print periodicals, and 52 databases. Sixty-five FTEs and 25 faculty librarians staff the library. Our attractive facility, which opened in 1998, provides over 900 seats, 40 group study rooms, 130 individual study-carrels, 60 public-access computers, wireless Internet access, 3 computer classrooms, and a satellite conferencing center. The 190,000 square foot building also houses the Tower Café, the HS/HSL coffee lounge.

The Library supports the 5,600 students, 2,045 faculty and staff members on UMB’s 60-acre research and technology complex of 58 buildings including the University of Maryland Medical Center. UMB’s professional and graduate schools include a dental school, graduate school, and schools of law, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, public health and social work. Healthy People 2020 Launch Invitation:

 

The Healthy People 2020 initiative invites you to be part of the launch of Healthy People 2020. 

The launch event will take place on December 2, 2010, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. EST where Assistant Secretary for Health Howard K. Koh will unveil Healthy People 2020 goals and objectives, the nation’s health promotion and disease prevention agenda.  NIH adds first images to major research database:

 The National Institutes of Health has expanded a genetic and clinical research database to give researchers access to the first digital study images. The National Eye Institute (NEI), in collaboration with the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), has made available more than 72,000 lens photographs and fundus photographs of the back of the eye, collected from the participants of the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS).

 These images are now accessible to scientists through NCBI’s online database of Genotypes and Phenotypes, known as dbGaP, which archives data from studies that explore the relationship between genetic variations (genotype) and observable traits (phenotype). New look for Resource Guide for Public Health Preparedness

The Resource Guide for Public Health Preparedness has a new look and new web address, http://phpreparedness.nlm.nih.gov. It is now a featured resource on the Disaster Information Management Research Center (DIMRC) web site, http://disasterinfo.nlm.nih.gov.

 The Resource Guide was first developed by the New York Academy of Medicine Library in 2002 with funding from the National Library of Medicine (NLM) National Information Center on Health Services Research and Health Care Technology (NICHSR). The Guide is now jointly funded by NICHSR and DIMRC. The Guide continues to provide access to no-cost web materials on public health preparedness topics for the public health workforce.

Recently, this database and web site moved to NLM and the content continues to be maintained by the New York Academy of Medicine Library. Previous web addresses will automatically take the user to the new web address. Comments and questions about the Resource Guide may be sent to tehip@teh.nlm.nih.gov .

The National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC), in conjunction with the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Middle Atlantic Region (NN/LM MAR) is offering two FREE hands-on classes in two different locations in our region. Journals Database to be merged with NLM Catalog

The NLM announced Friday that  the Journals Database will be retired. The NLM catalog will soon be updated to contain the “detailed MEDLINE indexing information about the journals in PubMed® and other National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) databases.”  See the full announcement  and screen captures at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/pubs/techbull/nd10/nd10_nlm_catalog.html

 These changes have not yet been implemented. We will let you know as soon as they are in place.

Award Report: A Regional Health Unconference, Brooklyn Public Library

HealthCampNYC, a regional health unconference focused on using collective knowledge to improve health literacy and community health, took place at the Central Library of Brooklyn Public Library on May 14, 2010. Unconferences are participant-driven events where the focus is on the collective knowledge of the group. This collaborative environment provided opportunities for learning, sharing, and relationship building.

The event targeted librarians, literacy professionals, medical professionals, public health professionals, and community providers in the metro and tri-state area. Over 85 people attended the all-day event where they participated in roundtable discussions on topics they decided and managed. Award Report: Library Training Center Smartboard Update, Crouse Hospital

Crouse Hospital Library’s Training Center was recently equipped with an interactive smartboard.  Installed this fall, the smartboard facilitates collaboration in the classroom allowing instructors to incorporate active instructional techniques tailored to a variety of learning styles.  The library provides classes in searching the medical and nursing literature to groups including students, staff and through a MAR outreach award to staff from the Visiting Nurses Association of Central New York.

Students enrolled in an oncology nursing rotation found that their post-clinical conferences were enhanced from use of smartboard technology, allowing them to present, discuss, and interact with ease, as one student commented:

I enjoyed our “mini lecture” with the use of the smart board for post conference. The visual aid helps me retain information.

50th Anniversary of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)

On November 18th, NLM marks the 50th anniversary of MeSH with a talk by Robert Braude, PhD. The talk entitled MeSH at 50 – 50th Anniversary of Medical Subject Headings will be videocast with captioning at http://videocast.nih.gov/ The event is scheduled from 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm.

Appointment of Jennifer Marill – Chief of NLM’s Technical Services Division

Sheldon Kotzin, Associate Director, Library Operations for the National Library of Medicine today announced the appointment of Ms. Jennifer Marill as the Chief of the Technical Services Division (TSD) in Library Operations. Ms. Maril will manage the staff responsible for selecting, acquiring, processing, and cataloging print and digital items for our collection. TSD staff also coordinate all journal licensing activities, implement policies related to collection development, and have responsibility for the repository of digital monographs and other formats that complements PubMed Central. She has been the Deputy Chief of TSD since March 2007 and worked in NLM’s Public Services Division from 1998-2003.

Thanksgiving Observance
