The Joint Task Force - National Capital Region 57th Presidential Inaugural Staff began preparations in support of the Presidential Inauguration. The task force is charged with coordinating all military ceremonial support for the inaugural period. As a joint component, it includes members from all branches of the armed forces of the United States, including Reserve and National Guard components.

Base experiences emergency response exercise

In what was called an "exercise to get the bad guys" by Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall police, base directorates combined talents and efforts for a force protection exercise during the morning of Sept. 26. While trained crisis management team members monitored the drill at the emergency operations center (EOC) in the control hub in Bldg. 59, the bulk of the activity transpired in and around the consolidated dining facility at about nine o'clock.

A Sentinel's last watch

Servicemembers rock all night at free concert

As their way of supporting servicemembers, the iconic rock band KISS gave a special gift to 2,000 area veterans, active duty troops, wounded warriors and friends July 19, putting on a free, up-close and personal concert at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Va. On the eve before KISS and heavy metal band Mötley Crüe began "The Tour," which kicked off in Bristow July 20 and will cover 40 dates across the U.S., with stops in Canada and Mexico, KISS held nothing back during what they called a "dress rehearsal," entertaining the small crowd with elaborate stage lighting, pyrotechnics, and theatrical stage antics. KISS was founded in New York City in January, 1973. The band features co-founders Gene Simmons on bass and vocals and Paul Stanley on rhythm guitar and lead vocals. Tommy Thayer plays lead guitar and provides vocals. Eric Singer, completes the group with drums and vocals. Their devoted fans are known as the KISS Army.

A line of severe thunderstorms with embedded hurricane-force winds, heavy rain and vivid lightning dealt a powerful blow to Northern Virginia and Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall the evening of June 29. In its aftermath, electrical power for JMB-HH headquarters, office buildings, barracks and businesses was knocked out of commission on June 29. Many services, including the shoppette, the Fort Myer Commissary, the Marine Corps exchange and base swimming pools remained closed during the days leading up to Independence Day.

Fort Belvoir responds to storm damage

FORT BELVOIR, Va. (July 5) -- Fort Belvoir's Installation Support Services and Directorate of Emergency Services personnel conducted major repair and clean up operations in response to wide-spread damage sustained during a severe thunderstorm that swept across the post June 29. The storm brought winds in excess of 70 mph that damaged or took down a number of trees and utility poles and resulted in the loss of electrical power, communication lines and internet connectivity over a large portion of the installation.
