The successful candidate for this position will serve as Deputy Chief of the Public Services Division and participate fully with the Chief in directing and managing all activities of the Division.  This position is located within the Division of Library Operations (LO), National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

PSD is looking for creative leadership in a variety of areas including oversight of digitization activities, web and social media, resource sharing, cooperative internal and external projects, and development of consumer health vocabularies.

We would like to invite librarians interested in or currently involved in library services targeted to clinical and translational science researchers to participate in this study.  Several potential roles for libraries and librarians are covered in this survey, including literature searching, instruction, data management, bioinformatics, collaboration and community engagement support.

This study follows up on a similar study conducted in the winter of 2011.  It is designed to chart the growth of services over the last year, as well as include librarians beyond those working with institutions which have received Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA).  Participants in the current study are NOT required to have participated in the 2011 study.

For the purposes of this study, “clinical and translational science” includes all research efforts and collaborations designed to facilitate the transfer of laboratory data into clinical practice and community health.  We are interested in your responses whether or not your institution has received a CTSA, and regardless of your location, as long as your library serves researchers in clinical and translational science.

Note that the survey has been designed to let only one participant respond on a specific computer.  That participant may interrupt the survey and then return to complete it on that computer, as long as cookies are not cleared.

Last week, MAR announced that we have set-up our new advisory structure that will consist of a Regional Advisory Committee (RAC) and four Special Advisory Groups (SAGs).  The committees and their members are available on our website:  http://nnlm.gov/mar/about/rac.html and http://nnlm.gov/mar/about/sag.html.

We have now set the dates for our first round of meetings:

• Regional Advisory Committee will meet April 30, 2012.

Special Advisory Groups

• Outreach to Health Professionals and Public Health Workers will meet April 5, 2012.
• Consumer Health will meet April 24, 2012.
• Hospital Libraries will meet April 20, 2012.
• Resource and Academic Libraries will meet April 3, 2012.

As many of you know, MLA is working with NLM to create the Disaster Information Specialization.  MLA currently has a contract with NLM to develop 5 new CE courses on the topic of disaster information.  Two of these courses are being hosted after the MLA 2012 in Seattle.  MLA wants to work with the RMLs to fill these two classes.  Here are the details:

• Each RML is able to send two attendees.  One of the two attendees should be an RML staff member.  So we are seeking one candidate from our region to attend.
• The courses are free for attendees.  Attendees will be asked to cover their own transportation, hotel and food costs.
• The courses will be held at the RML at the University of Washington.  MLA will provide buses to and from the University and the Seattle Convention Center.
• Attendees will take both classes.  However, we are not splitting up attendance so that two attendees can take the first class and a new set of attendees can take the second.
• Attendees will receive MLA CE contact hours for attending the classes. They can use these hours toward apply to the specialization.

The National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, is now recruiting for the position of Deputy Chief of its History of Medicine Division.

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is the world’s largest medical library and a major organizational component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is responsible for collecting, preserving, and promoting the dissemination of information important to the progress of medicine and public health, both nationally and internationally.  The History of Medicine Division (HMD), a major component of Library Operations, NLM, (1) selects, acquires, processes, preserves, and gives access to rare books, manuscripts, archives, images, historical audiovisuals, and electronic materials in the field of biomedicine; (2) promotes scholarship in the history of medicine using the NLM historical collections; (3) develops and promotes the use of K-12 curriculum materials associated with exhibitions; (4) develops, promotes, and travels exhibitions to libraries across America; and (5) develops and promotes original scholarship to support innovative and interactive onsite and online exhibition and digital programs.

As the Deputy Chief of the HMD – and with records of accomplishment not only in the field of history but also in administration and project management – the incumbent will share responsibility for and participate fully with the Chief of the HMD in directing and managing all activities of the HMD.

This is a Supervisory Historian, GS-170-14, position with a salary range from $105,211 to $136,771 including locality pay per annum.
