Background

The FAA is currently developing proposed regulation that will extend to all 14 CFR part 121 operators to implement a Safety Management System (SMS). Although this proposal extends only to part 121 operators, the FAA has developed these general requirements with the possibility that in the future, they could apply to other FAA-regulated entities, such as part 135 operators and part 145 repair stations. The application of SMS to organizations operating in accordance with various industry and regulatory standards has many service providers concerned with potential redundancy and effort associated with implementing an SMS.

About the Conference

The purpose of this conference is to compare and discuss existing industry standards to the requirements of SMS and how these current standards can be leveraged to meet SMS requirements. This is commonly referred to as a "gap" analysis. A gap analysis identifies the missing components of existing processes and procedures needed to meet the proposed SMS requirements. Organizations can then identify the changes or processes needed to meet SMS requirements. By integrating existing processes and procedures into SMS, implementation cost and effort are minimized.
