EPA's Urban Heat Island Community Actions Database, accessible through the links and map below, provides information on more than 75 local and statewide initiatives to reduce heat islands and achieve related benefits.
Each entry in the database includes a description of the activity, its current status, and a link to a website (if available) for more information.
Use the links below to view actions in the database:
- By State & Locality lists all initiatives alphabetically by state and city/town name;
- By Initiative Type lists the initiatives by type (e.g., ordinance, building code, outreach program);
- By Strategy lists the programs by mitigation strategy (e.g., trees and vegetation, green roofs, cool roofs, cool pavements); and
- A clickable map (shown below) displays all initiatives in each state.
The actions listed in the database are just some of the efforts underway to cool communities while saving energy and improving air quality. If you are aware of a program or initiative that is not included in our list, please
submit an initiative for our review.
