STUTTGART, Germany — A Stuttgart-based Special Forces soldier died Tuesday of wounds suffered during an intense firefight with insurgents while on patrol in Wardak province in eastern Afghanistan, according to military officials.

Sgt. 1st Class Danial R. Adams, 35, of Portland, Ore., died when insurgents assaulted his unit with mortar, machine-gun and small-arms fire, the Defense Department reported.

Adams joined the Army in 1995 as an infantryman, serving as a team and squad leader while stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska. His first Special Forces assignment was as a senior medical sergeant with the 3rd Special Forces Group out of Fort Bragg, N.C., according to U.S. Army Special Operations Command. In 2009, Adams joined the 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) in Stuttgart.

Adams is survived by his wife, Melany; his sons, Jeffrey and John; and his daughter, Skye, according to Special Operations Command.

Adams was posthumously promoted to master sergeant.

A memorial service will be held in Stuttgart, but details for the service still are being worked out.
