With School

When fathers are involved in the lives of their kids, especially with their education, they learn more, perform better in school, and exhibit healthier behavior. Even when fathers do not share a home with their kids, their active involvement can have a lasting and positive impact.

Did you know –

  • Preschoolers with involved fathers have stronger verbal skills than those with less involved fathers.
  • Girls who have a close, warm relationship with their father have a stronger competence in mathematics.
  • Boys with highly involved fathers in their life receive superior grades and perform a year above their expected age level on achievement tests.

What to do?

  • Make contact with your child's school.
  • Meet regularly with teachers.
  • Consider joining the school’s parent-teacher group
  • Work on time management together - designate a time for nightly homework and help your child stick to this schedule.

Make contact with your child's school. Meet regularly with teachers and consider joining the parent teacher organization. One of the best ways to make sure your child values education is to show them that you care through your involvement. Don't just ask if their homework is done, ask what the assignment was, if it was difficult, and what did they learn. Ask open ended questions like "I know you're studying the weather this month, tell me what today's lesson was about." Talking about the school day on a regular basis can help your child open up about their strengths and struggles, both in the classroom and outside of it.

There are a lot of ways you can get involved with your kids and their education. This section provides some help in getting you started.
