On behalf of President Obama and the people of the United States, I am delighted to send best wishes to the people of Macedonia as you celebrate your Independence Day this September 8.

On this special day, we reaffirm the partnership we enjoy between our nations. This anniversary not only offers the opportunity for the citizens of Macedonia to look back at their shared history and heritage, but also to look forward to a future in which your country is a strong, prosperous, and diverse democracy that is fully integrated into the Euro-Atlantic community. The United States remains committed to helping Macedonia strengthen its multi-ethnic and democratic institutions. In cooperation with your leaders and civil society, we will work with you to improve education, promote media freedom, and the rule of law, strengthening the democratic foundations vital to a vibrant, inclusive multi-ethnic society.

As you celebrate 21 years of independence, know that the United States stands with Macedonia as a partner and friend. I wish all of the citizens of your country peace and prosperity in the coming year.
