Most AAFES gas prices dip below $3 a gallon

Army and Air Force Exchange Service gas prices in Europe will plunge as much as 25.3 cents a gallon Saturday, bringing the cost of fuel at the exchange to its lowest point in more than a year and a half.

After the drop, prices for all grades of gas will be at least $1.13 less than they were just six weeks ago in Germany, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. This week’s drop is the fourth straight double-digit price cut in the three countries.

Prices in the U.S. continue to fall, according to the AAA, which noted a 4.2-cent drop in prices from Wednesday to Thursday, and nearly a 12-cent plunge since Monday.

The cheapest grades of gas in each locale will be less than $3 a gallon for the first time in more than a year.

Regular gas, sold only in Germany, dives 24.9 cents a gallon to $2.874 — that’s the lowest it has been since April 2007.

In the Netherlands, midgrade sheds 25.3 cents to fall to $2.98 a gallon — nearly $2 a gallon less than its mid-July peak of $4.963, and its lowest mark since February 2007.

U.K. midgrade also drops 25.3 cents, falling to $2.965 per gallon — nearly $1.15 less than six weeks ago.

Diesel fuel prices also fall significantly, though not as dramatically as gas prices. Germany diesel drops 23.2 cents a gallon to $3.604. Diesel in the Netherlands and U.K. falls 19.4 cents to $3.468 and $3.453, respectively.

The price for a barrel of oil on world markets last week averaged $64.48, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. That’s the lowest weekly average since May 2007, according to the EIA, and less than half the peak reached in July.
